Can Jonch. Culture Centre for Peace
On the 31st of May 1938, Granollers suffered from one of the bloodiest bombings that was carried out on the civil population. 224 people died as a result of it. The city was bombed on more occasions in January 1939, but none of them were as bloody as the first one.
This tragic event, but one which, at the same time, has enlightened us on the path to reflection about memory, dialogue and peace, has deeply marked the memory of the people of Granollers.
For years, Granollers has been working with the aim of reinforcing its commitment to the recovery of the historical memory and to cultivating the necessary efforts that lead to dialogue and to peace. As a result of this desire, the project to create the Culture Centre for Peace was born, conceived as a centre of resources for peace, cooperation, solidarity and human rights.
Granollers Town Council designated Can Jonch House as the Culture Centre for Peace, in keeping with the 2003-2007 Municipal Action Plan. The centre has been refurbished by means of a plan for use that was drawn up based on a participative process.
Coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Granollers on the 31st of May 1938, a programme of commemorative activities was organised, based on the historical memory of the bombing that would lead to reflection and the promotion of the culture of peace, with the participation of all the general public.
Can Jonch. Culture Centre for Peace was opened as part of this commemoration on the 24th of May 2008.
